Chapter 01
The day everything changed.
One day he was fine. The next, everything changed.
My son was nine years old when he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Without warning. Without time to prepare. One conversation with a doctor and our whole world shifted beneath us.
What followed were weeks of tests, long drives, longer waiting rooms. We went to CHOP — Children's Hospital of Philadelphia — for appointments that lasted all day. We sat with unknowing. We prayed in parking lots. We held it together in front of him and fell apart quietly when he couldn't see.
He needed surgery. But he'd caught COVID, and heart surgery waits for no one — except a virus. So we waited thirty more days. Him in a heart monitor. Us in a kind of stillness that doesn't have a name.
During that wait, I made us hoodies. Simple ones — with a heart on the chest and message. Something for our family to wear together. Me, my husband, our three boys. A quiet way of saying: we are resilient.
We wore them the day of his surgery. We still wear them today.
My son made it through beautifully.
Afterward, he told me how much he loved the hoodies. That more families should have them. He understood before I did that comfort like this isn't meant to stay in one family.
